Debate for the climate

How does OLIKA create opinion for climate change?

In addition to changing our own production, we are working to ensure that other publishers also take the issue of transition seriously. We share the knowledge we have gained and ask questions of others, all to increase the pace of the transition. We are also debating so that more people who buy books will ask the question of how they are produced, and what their climate footprint is. Unlike the fashion industry or the food industry, for example, the book industry is lagging behind. We rarely get questions about where the book is produced, how, in which factories, or in which part of the world. We hope that will change!

What is the Swedish book industry doing for the climate? ( B oktugg, 2020)

Print on recycled paper – leave the forest alone! (Aftonbladet, 2022)

When will the Swedish book industry take the climate issue seriously? (Boktugg, 2024)

It is inspiring that more people are debating in the book industry, here it is authors, illustrators and other cultural actors who are raising their voices:

Disinterest in Nordic Ecolabelled books (TT, 2019)

Don't clear natural forests to make our books (Expressen, 2021)

The best thing for the climate would be to cancel the book fair (GP, 2022)

The book fair's climate focus is accused of hypocrisy (SVT, 2022)

Is OLIKA involved in research projects on sustainability?

Yes, we like research and knowledge. OLIKA started as a result of Professor Lena Kåreland's research that showed how stereotypically girls and boys were portrayed in children's literature. Therefore, it is always obvious to say yes when we are asked to participate in research projects. We are one of 31 companies that were selected for the study presented in the following article:

Addressing Climate Change the Nordic Way

In 2018, OLIKA joined the Fossil-Free Sweden initiative, to gain focus and inspiration, and to learn from other actors who also want to change. We cannot wait for politicians, as a company we must act on our own and do what we think is necessary.

In 2024, OLIKA will be on a panel with Climate Hero and the network We don't have time , broadcasting from the climate summit in Bonn and from Stockholm. 99% of all companies in Sweden are small businesses. What if they all did their climate analyses and started working towards net zero emissions? What a collective power we would have.
