Role model Muna Idow: couldn't swim - started swimming school!
When Muna, 25, came to Sweden in 2015, she could not swim. With a lot of persistence and determination, she learned to swim on her own. Now she loves water and runs a swimming school for adults.
You have started the swimming school Mermaid where you teach adults to swim. How did you come up with that idea?
I grew up on the run in Africa and was never taught to swim. When I finally got to do it in Sweden, I realized what freedom and security it gave me. And how fun it is! I wanted to give others the same chance I got, and that's why I started Mermaid.
What was the best?
That it's not just about learning to swim and having fun. Those who join also begin to feel more included in society. It felt extra fun.
Something difficult?
When I started Mermaid, I had only been in Sweden for four years, and it was difficult to start a company in a new country, on a new continent. What is f-tax? How do taxes work? But over time I built up a network of people who helped me.
Tips for others?
I started Mermaid as a UF company during high school, and it was good to have support from the school. So if you have an idea, don't be afraid that it's too big. Try it too!
